For this year's 36 days of type, I decided to explore tessellations through letterforms.

Tessellation

A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Another word for a tessellation is a tiling.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the works of MC Escher who explored the use of geometry in his artworks to achieve some mind-bending illusions. A great body of his work explores tessellations that are quite famous and you may have already seen.

Exploring the ABCs of tessellation...

I managed to make tessellated designs with 18 of 26 letters. My aim was to surprise myself with every letter and push my visualisation skills. Each one uses one letterform and explores a new way of tessellating it, experimenting with translation, rotation, negative space, isometric grids, and creating harmonious designs.
